Public transit layer on Google Maps

I'm happy to say that last week we launched the Transit layer on Google Maps, just over a year after coming up with the first designs. It gives you an overlay of the metro systems for over 60 cities worldwide, and clicking on any one of the stations highlights the lines that run through it.

It's really useful for places where we don't yet have transit directions coverage. It's also very interesting to see the networks laid out in their real physical dimensions instead of the standard Beck-style layout that we're used to seeing...

New Google Transit homepage

We've just launched another new design iteration for the Google Transit homepage. This version uses a heatmap to visualize the coverage we have, which continues to rapidly expand.
